<item><hi format=bold>YF-16A:</hi> Two prototype and six pre-production F-16As were given the Y prefix to indicate service test, as all were initially employed by the manufacturer and the Air Force to evaluate the capabilities of the type.

<item><hi format=bold>YF-16B:</hi> The two pre-production F-16Bs have been allocated the designation YF-16B for the same reason as the YF-16A above.

<item><hi format=bold>F-16A:</hi> The initial production version with 664 ordered between 1978 and 1983, although most are now operated by the Reserves or in the air defense role with the Air National Guard. The latter aircraft are known as F-16A(ADF) for Air Defense Fighter and are distinguishable by an avionics bulge at the base of the fin.

<item><hi format=bold>F-16B:</hi> Some 121 two-seat trainers were ordered between 1978 and 1983, although one was diverted to Egypt before delivery, leaving a total of 120 in USAF service.
